The Authority Stack: A Safe Link Stacking Framework for Growing Brands

By Alvena Ode, Founder & CMO, Blastily · 4 min read

Reviewing authority link and referral performance

"Link stacking" usually means piling up self-made links. The Authority Stack is a different approach: you stack earned credibility in layers, point it at strong pages on your website, and let your internal links spread it across your site. It's safer, it lasts longer, and every layer also builds trust with real people.

This guide is part of our authority link building series. For the background on traditional stacking, see what is link stacking?

The six layers

Layer What it includes Go deeper
1. Foundation Your website hub pages, About and press pages, structured data Internal linking, entity SEO
2. Identity Complete, consistent profiles and citations Local citations, LinkedIn
3. Relationships Partner, supplier, client and association links Partner links
4. Expertise Guest articles, podcasts, speaking, interviews Guest posting, podcast backlinks
5. Media News and trade coverage, digital PR, research Digital PR, original research
6. Amplification Radio, TV, billboards, social and events that create searches and mentions Offline to online authority

Layer 1: Build the foundation

Before earning links, create pages worth linking to:

  • Hub pages for your core topics, each fully answering a big question (long-form content)
  • Service pages linked from those hubs
  • An About page and press page with your story, team and coverage (what your website needs)
  • Structured data describing your organization and key people
  • Internal links connecting hubs, supporting articles and service pages

Layer 2: Establish identity

Create or clean up profiles on the platforms that matter: Google Business Profile, LinkedIn (company and founder), industry directories, chambers of commerce, review sites and social channels. Keep names, descriptions and contact details identical. These don't usually carry big link value, but they confirm who you are.

Layer 3: Activate relationships

Ask the people who already know you: partners, suppliers, clients (for case studies), associations, sponsors and alumni networks. These are often the easiest relevant links you'll ever get.

Layer 4: Share expertise

Write guest articles, appear on podcasts, speak at events and give expert commentary. Each appearance should include a natural link to a relevant page, often your author bio or a hub guide. See thought leadership articles and speaking engagements.

Layer 5: Earn media

News and trade coverage are the highest-authority layer. Use newsworthy stories, data and expert commentary. See PR strategy and how to write a press release.

Layer 6: Amplify

Advertising doesn't create links directly, but it creates the attention that leads to links: branded searches, social mentions, media interest and partnership enquiries. A radio campaign or billboard can make journalists and partners more likely to recognize your name.

Point every layer at the right page

  • Media and research links → your research page or hub guide
  • Guest posts and podcasts → author bio or a related hub guide
  • Partner links → service or partnership pages
  • Citations and profiles → home page or location pages

Then let internal links carry authority from those pages to service and conversion pages.

Keep it natural

  • Varied, natural anchor text (anchor text guide)
  • No paid links without proper attributes
  • No link exchanges at scale
  • Quality over volume

Frequently asked questions

What is the Authority Stack?

A framework for building authority by layering earned credibility (media coverage, guest articles, podcasts, partner links, citations and profiles) that points to strong hub pages on your site, then spreading that authority through internal links.

How is it different from Google stacking?

Google stacking relies on pages you create yourself. The Authority Stack relies mainly on links and mentions other people choose to give you, supported by genuine profiles and a well-structured website.

How long does it take?

The foundation (profiles, hub pages, internal links) can be set up in a few weeks. Earned layers build over months. Plan for at least six to twelve months of consistent activity.

Can a small business do this without an agency?

Yes. Many layers, such as profiles, citations, partner links and podcast guesting, are achievable in-house. PR and media placement often benefit from experienced help.
