For local businesses, authority starts close to home. Local citations (consistent listings of your business name, address and phone number across reputable directories and local sites) help search engines trust your details and help customers find you. Here's how to build them properly.
This guide is part of our authority link building series, and supports local SEO with Google Business Profile.

Use it everywhere, exactly.
| Tier | Examples |
|---|---|
| Essential | Google Business Profile, Apple and Bing maps listings |
| Major directories and review sites | Leading general directories and review platforms used in Canada |
| Industry-specific | Directories and associations for your trade or profession |
| Local | Chamber of commerce, business improvement areas, city and tourism sites |
| Social | LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram business profiles |
Search for old addresses, previous business names and duplicate listings. Correct or merge them. Moves and rebrands often leave inconsistent data behind (rebranding).
Descriptions, photos, categories, services, hours and links. Complete listings earn more trust and clicks.
Reviews on key platforms strengthen local visibility and conversions. See social proof and online reputation.

Review your top citations twice a year, and update everything immediately if your address, phone or hours change.
Citations form the identity layer of the Authority Stack. They won't make you an authority on their own, but without them, everything else is built on shaky ground.
An online mention of your business name, address and phone number (NAP), usually in directories, review sites, maps, social platforms and local websites.
Consistent, accurate citations on reputable platforms help search engines trust your business details, and many bring real customers. Their ranking impact is smaller than reviews and relevance, but inconsistency can hurt.
Your Google Business Profile first, then major map and review platforms, industry-specific directories, your chamber of commerce and local business associations.
Only when the directory brings genuine visibility or customers in your industry or city. Avoid low-quality directories that exist only to sell links.
