Partner, Supplier and Association Links: Easy Authority Wins

Reviewing authority link and referral performance

Some of the most valuable links you'll ever earn are hiding in plain sight: organizations that already know and trust you. Association backlinks and partner links are relevant, credible and often just one polite email away.

This guide is part of our authority link building series.

Where to look

Source Link opportunity
Chambers of commerce Member directory, news, event pages
Industry associations Member listings, articles, speaker pages
Suppliers and vendors "Our clients" or case study pages
Clients Case studies, vendor or partner pages, testimonials
Technology partners Partner directories, integration pages
Sponsorships Event, team or charity sponsor pages
Universities and colleges Alumni features, guest lectures, research collaborations
Accelerators and programs Portfolio or alumni pages
Co-marketing partners Joint content, webinars, campaigns (co-branding)
Events Speaker and exhibitor pages (speaking)

Step 1: List your relationships

Brainstorm every organization you work with, belong to, sponsor, supply or buy from. Most businesses find 20 or more candidates.

Step 2: Check what already exists

Are you listed? Is the link correct? Is your description current?

Step 3: Ask

Hi [Name], we've really enjoyed working with [Organization] on [project/membership]. I noticed you have a [partner/member/client] page. Would you be open to including [Brand] with a link to [URL]? Happy to send a logo and short description. Thanks!

More in outreach templates.

Step 4: Offer value

  • Write a case study together
  • Contribute an article to their blog or newsletter (guest posting)
  • Speak at their event
  • Co-host a webinar (webinars)

Value-driven collaboration earns stronger, contextual links than directory listings.

Step 5: Participate genuinely

Associations reward active members with speaking slots, committee roles, awards and features. Participation leads to authority, relationships and referrals (networking).

Rules to follow

  • Sponsorship links that are part of a paid package should typically be marked sponsored or nofollow
  • Avoid reciprocal link schemes: occasional mutual links between real partners are normal; systematic swaps for rankings aren't
  • Keep it relevant: links from unrelated organizations add little

Quick-win list for local businesses

  • Chamber of commerce member directory
  • Business improvement area listing
  • Supplier and manufacturer "where to buy" pages
  • Local charity or team sponsorship pages (marked appropriately if paid)
  • Alumni association business directory
  • Accelerator or incubator portfolio pages

Track

Keep a list of organizations, contacts, requests and outcomes. These links form the relationship layer of the Authority Stack, and they often bring referrals too (referral marketing).

Frequently asked questions

Why are partner and association links valuable?

They come from relevant, established organizations that genuinely know you, which makes them natural, trustworthy links that also send interested visitors.

Is it okay to ask partners for links?

Yes. Asking to be listed on a partner, supplier or member directory, or featured in a case study, is a normal business request. Avoid large-scale 'link to me and I'll link to you' exchanges designed only for rankings.

Are sponsorship links allowed?

Sponsorships are fine, but if the link is part of what you paid for, it should typically carry a sponsored or nofollow attribute under Google's guidelines.

Which associations should I join?

Ones relevant to your industry, customers and city, where you'll genuinely participate, not just to get a listing.
