Local SEO: How to Use Google Business Profile to Win Local Clients

Search visibility, local SEO and digital performance dashboards

When people search "near me" or "[service] in Calgary," the map results often get the first click. Your Google Business Profile is how you show up there. For many local businesses, it's the most valuable free marketing tool available. Here's how to optimize it.

This guide is part of our digital marketing strategy series.

Why it matters

  • It appears in Google Search and Maps for local searches
  • It shows your reviews, hours, photos and contact options at a glance
  • Customers can call, get directions or visit your website in one tap
  • It's free

Step 1: Claim and verify

Search for your business on Google or go to the Google Business Profile site. Claim your listing (or create one) and complete verification.

Step 2: Get the basics exactly right

  • Business name: your real name, without extra keywords (adding keywords can break guidelines)
  • Primary category: the most specific one that fits; this has a big influence on which searches you appear for
  • Secondary categories: other genuine services
  • Address or service area
  • Hours, including holiday hours
  • Phone and website (use a tracking parameter on the website link so you can see visits in analytics)

Keep your name, address and phone number identical across your website and directories.

Step 3: Complete every section

  • Services or products with descriptions and prices where possible
  • Business description: who you serve and what makes you different (value proposition)
  • Attributes relevant to your business
  • Booking or quote links where available

Step 4: Add great photos and videos

Show your storefront (so people recognize it), team, work, products and happy customers (with permission). Add new photos regularly. Real photos build more trust than stock images.

Step 5: Build a steady flow of reviews

Reviews influence both ranking and decisions.

  • Ask every satisfied customer, with a direct review link
  • Make it part of your process (after a project, at checkout, in a follow-up email)
  • Respond to every review professionally
  • Never buy reviews or offer incentives that break Google's policies

See social proof and online reputation management.

Step 6: Use posts and Q&A

  • Posts: share offers, events, news and new work
  • Questions and answers: add common questions yourself with clear answers, and monitor for new questions

Step 7: Strengthen local signals beyond the profile

  • Consistent listings in reputable directories and industry sites
  • Location or service-area pages on your website
  • Local links: chambers of commerce, associations, sponsorships, local media (local media coverage)

Step 8: Track results

Your profile's performance section shows searches, views, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Combine with website analytics and call tracking to see which actions turn into clients.

Local SEO and offline advertising

When people hear your radio spot or pass your billboard, many search your name next. A complete, well-reviewed profile turns that curiosity into a call or visit. See billboard advertising and radio advertising.

Common mistakes

  1. Keyword-stuffed business names
  2. Wrong or overly broad primary category
  3. Outdated hours, especially holidays
  4. No response to reviews
  5. Duplicate listings for the same location

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free. You need to verify that you own or manage the business.

How do I rank higher on Google Maps?

Google's local results are generally based on relevance, distance and prominence. Choose accurate categories, complete every section, keep information consistent, earn reviews, and build local authority through links and mentions.

Can a service-area business without a storefront have a profile?

Yes. You can hide your address and list the areas you serve instead.

Should I respond to every Google review?

Responding to reviews shows you're engaged and gives future customers confidence. Prioritize negative and detailed reviews, and keep responses professional.
