Selling to businesses takes longer, involves more people and depends heavily on trust. A clear B2B sales funnel turns that complexity into a repeatable process. Here's how to build one for a growing business.
This guide is part of our client acquisition strategy series.
| Stage | Goal | Key activities |
|---|---|---|
| Target | Know exactly who to sell to | Ideal client profile, target account list |
| Attract | Get known by those accounts | Content, PR, LinkedIn, events, ads |
| Capture | Start a conversation | Lead magnets, consultations, referrals |
| Qualify | Focus on real opportunities | Discovery calls, scoring |
| Propose | Show the path and value | Proposals, pilots |
| Close | Win the business | Negotiation, agreements |
| Expand | Grow the account | Onboarding, results, upsells, referrals |
Define your ideal client profile: industry, size, location, typical problem, budget and decision-makers. Build a list of target accounts, starting with 50–100 companies that fit.
B2B buyers research before they talk to sales. Be visible where they look:
Offer something a serious buyer values: an audit, assessment, benchmark report, workshop or consultation. Referrals and partner introductions are often your best B2B leads; see referral marketing.
Use a discovery call to understand:
Be willing to say "we're not the right fit." It builds trust and saves time.
A strong proposal restates their problem in their words, outlines the approach, timeline and deliverables, shows expected outcomes, includes relevant proof (social proof), and offers options. A small paid pilot can lower the risk for new clients.
Address objections (handling client objections), agree terms in writing, and make the next step easy.
Deliver results, communicate value, then grow the account through additional services and referrals. See retention and upselling.
Most B2B leads aren't ready immediately. Keep in touch with useful content, regular updates and personal check-ins. See lead nurturing funnel.
Send a short written summary within a day. It shows you listened and gives your contact something to share internally with other decision-makers.
A CRM makes this visible and keeps every opportunity moving.
B2B purchases usually involve higher values, longer sales cycles and several decision-makers. The funnel relies more on relationships, education, proposals and trust.
It varies widely, from a couple of weeks for small services to many months for large contracts. Measure your own average and plan cash flow and marketing around it.
Use a simple framework such as BANT (budget, authority, need, timeline) or ask about the problem, impact, decision process and timeline during a discovery call.
Referrals, LinkedIn, search, industry events, partnerships, PR and thought leadership, podcasts, and targeted advertising such as trade publications and business radio.
