Your existing clients already trust you. Upselling and cross-selling, done well, help them get more value while growing your revenue, without the cost of finding someone new. The key is helping, not pushing. Here's how.
This guide is part of our client acquisition strategy series.
Only offer what helps the customer reach their goal. If you wouldn't recommend it to a friend in the same situation, don't offer it.
| Moment | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Right after a win | They've just seen value |
| At renewal | They're already making a decision |
| When their needs grow | New goals need new support |
| At purchase (e-commerce) | Relevant add-ons are convenient |
| During a check-in | You can ask about upcoming plans |
Make the next step easy to understand:
Example (services): a client running a radio campaign might benefit from adding billboards on the same commuter routes, or PR around a launch.
Example (retail): a customer buying boots might need waterproofing spray and winter socks.
Always give a reason and make it easy to decline.
Your CRM and purchase history show what clients have bought, what similar clients added next, and when renewals are due. Use them to make relevant, timely suggestions.
| Starting service | Natural next step | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Press release | Ongoing PR retainer | Consistent coverage instead of one-off news |
| Radio campaign | Radio + billboards on the same routes | More frequency among commuters |
| Website build | Maintenance and SEO | Keeps the site current and visible |
| One workshop | Quarterly strategy sessions | Ongoing accountability |
Map your own services this way so your team knows which recommendation fits which client, and when.
Make sure everyone who talks to clients knows the natural next steps, the reasons they help, and how to suggest them without pressure. Role-play common scenarios. A helpful suggestion from a trusted account manager lands far better than a scripted pitch.
Upselling works best as part of a strong relationship. Invest in retention and loyalty first, and additional sales follow naturally.
Upselling encourages a customer to choose a higher-value version of what they're buying. Cross-selling offers a related, complementary product or service.
Only recommend what genuinely helps the customer reach their goal, explain why, and make it easy to say no. Timing and relevance matter more than technique.
When the customer has just seen value, such as after a successful result, at renewal, or when their needs have grown.
Yes. For example, a PR client might also benefit from a radio campaign, or a website client from ongoing maintenance. Package related services so the combination is easy to understand.
