Social platforms can change their algorithms overnight. Your email list is yours. Email marketing done well turns leads into clients and clients into loyal customers, at a very low cost per message. Here's how to make it convert.
This guide is part of our digital marketing strategy series.
Give people a reason to subscribe:
Add sign-up forms to your website, social profiles, events and checkout. Use unchecked boxes and clear language for consent.
See lead nurturing and CASL for more.
Send the right message to the right people:
| Sequence | Trigger | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome | New subscriber | Deliver the promise, introduce your brand |
| Nurture | Downloaded a resource | Build trust toward a consultation or purchase |
| Onboarding | New customer | Help them get value fast (retention) |
| Abandoned cart / enquiry | Started but didn't finish | Bring them back |
| Review / referral | After a purchase or project | Build social proof and referrals |
| Win-back | Inactive for a period | Re-engage or clean the list |
Subject lines: clear, specific, curiosity-sparking, and honest. Test two versions.
Body: - One main idea per email - Short paragraphs, conversational tone - Useful first, promotional second - One clear call to action - Mobile-friendly design
Tie email results to your CRM so you can see which emails lead to sales.
Advertising can grow your list: radio, billboards and social ads can drive sign-ups for a contest or offer. Then email nurtures those people over time. See calls to action that drive response.
| Goal | Example |
|---|---|
| Useful content | "3 ways to measure your billboard (without clicks)" |
| Curiosity | "The radio mistake most small brands make" |
| Offer | "Your spring estimate: 15% off until April 30" |
| Personal | "A quick question about your next campaign" |
| Event | "Seats left for Thursday's PR workshop" |
Keep them honest. Subject lines that overpromise hurt trust and future open rates.
Yes. Email reaches people who have chosen to hear from you, it's a channel you own, and it supports every stage from nurturing leads to retaining customers.
Often enough to stay relevant, not so often that people unsubscribe. Many small businesses start with a weekly or twice-monthly newsletter, plus automated emails triggered by actions.
Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation. It generally requires consent before sending commercial electronic messages, clear identification of the sender, and a working unsubscribe mechanism in every message.
Buying lists is a bad idea. It typically doesn't meet CASL consent requirements, damages deliverability, and reaches people who don't want to hear from you.
