Plenty of ads get noticed. Far fewer get action. Ads that convert follow a simple formula: the right person, one clear message, a reason to act now, proof, and an easy next step. Here's how to apply it across social, search, radio, TV and billboards.

This guide is part of our brand and creative series.

The conversion formula

  1. Audience: who exactly is this for?
  2. Message: one benefit they care about
  3. Offer: a reason to act now
  4. Proof: why they should believe you
  5. Call to action: one simple next step
  6. Destination: a landing page or location that continues the story

1. Speak to one audience

An ad for everyone speaks to no one. Name the audience or their situation: "Calgary homeowners," "first-time founders," "restaurants with empty Tuesday nights." See how to reach the right audience.

2. Lead with a benefit

Feature Benefit
24/7 emergency service Your furnace fixed tonight, not next week
Press release distribution Your story in front of the journalists your customers read
Heated seats Warm in minus 30

3. Make an offer worth acting on

  • A discount or bonus with a deadline
  • A free consultation, estimate or audit
  • A limited-quantity item
  • An exclusive for listeners, viewers or followers

4. Add proof

Reviews, ratings, customer numbers you can verify, recognizable clients (with permission), media mentions, guarantees. See social proof.

5. Write a clear call to action

Tell people exactly what to do: "Book your free estimate at northside.ca/warm." See how to write high-converting calls to action.

6. Match the destination

The landing page must repeat the ad's message and offer, load fast on mobile and make the action easy. Mismatches kill conversions. See customer journey mapping.

Format tips

  • Social: hook in the first second, captions, native style (social media ads)
  • Search: match the searcher's words; include the offer and location
  • Radio: brand name three times; one easy action (radio)
  • TV: brand early, show the benefit (TV)
  • Billboard: seven words or fewer; one idea (billboard design)

Use your customers' words

The phrases customers use in reviews, emails and calls are often more persuasive than marketing language. Borrow them. See customer feedback.

Stay honest

Every claim must be true and substantiated, prices and conditions must be clear, and "limited time" must really be limited. Misleading advertising can breach the Competition Act and destroys trust.

Pre-launch checklist

  • [ ] One audience, one message
  • [ ] Benefit stated clearly
  • [ ] Offer and deadline (if any) clear
  • [ ] Proof included
  • [ ] One call to action
  • [ ] Destination matches the ad
  • [ ] Tracking in place (codes and URLs)
  • [ ] Claims checked

Test and improve

Run two versions with one difference, measure cost per lead or sale, keep the winner, test again. See how to A/B test creative. If ads are seen but not acted on, work through high visibility, low sales.

Frequently asked questions

What makes an ad convert?

Reaching the right audience with a clear message about a benefit they care about, a compelling offer, proof that you can deliver, and a simple, easy next step that matches the landing page or location they're sent to.

Should ads focus on features or benefits?

Lead with benefits, meaning what the customer gets. Use features as proof of how you deliver it.

How many messages should one ad have?

One. Ads with several messages usually communicate none of them well.

How do I know which ad converts best?

Test versions against each other with separate tracking and compare cost per lead or sale, not just clicks.
