In every market, the most persuasive voice for your brand is a real customer who loves it. Brand advocates (customers, partners and fans who recommend you voluntarily) build trust faster than any ad, especially in new markets where you're unknown. Here's how to build a community of advocates across regions.
This guide is part of our international expansion series.
| Element | Examples |
|---|---|
| Access | Early product access, previews, private events |
| Recognition | Features on your channels, badges, titles |
| Rewards | Discounts, credits, gifts, commissions |
| Community | Private groups, meetups, co-creation sessions |
| Tools | Referral links, shareable content, talking points |
Appoint community leads or ambassadors in each market who organize local meetups, share local content and give feedback. They understand what works culturally (culturally relevant campaigns).
When advocates receive material benefits (free products, discounts, commissions), their endorsements generally need clear disclosure. Rules vary by country: Ad Standards guidelines in Canada, FTC guidance in the U.S., and others. See international influencer rules.
Advocates are a real-time feedback channel. Ask their opinions on products, campaigns and local strategies, and show them how their input made a difference.
A Canadian outdoor apparel brand expanding to the U.K. invites 20 loyal U.K. customers to become "Trail Ambassadors." They receive early access to new products, an ambassador discount, a private online group and quarterly calls with the product team. In return, they share honest reviews and trail photos (with disclosure) and host small local meetups. Within a year, ambassador content and referrals become one of the brand's top U.K. acquisition sources.
Advocacy grows from great experiences. Invest in retention and loyalty programs, and advocacy follows. Gen Z audiences in particular value community and participation; see branding for Gen Z.
A customer, partner, employee or fan who voluntarily recommends your brand to others, online or offline, because they genuinely like it.
Ambassador programs build long-term relationships with enthusiastic customers or community members, often with smaller audiences, rewards and access. Influencer marketing usually involves paid, campaign-based content from creators.
Many programs reward advocates with perks, early access, discounts, commissions or recognition. When there's a material benefit, endorsements generally need to be disclosed.
Look at repeat customers, people who leave detailed reviews, social followers who tag you, customers who refer others, and high-scoring Net Promoter Score respondents.
